The Monk
The Monk is a central character in the 16th century novel Journey to the West. He is based on the historical Buddhist monk Xuanzang.
In the novel, he is a Chinese Buddhist monk, named Tang Sanzang. He is sent by Emperor Taizong on a mission to India, hence the title Journey to the West. His mission is to fetch a set of Buddhist scriptures back to China for the purpose of spreading Buddhism in his native land. To aid and protect him on his journey, he then recruits -with help of Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin)- three powerful supernatural beings : Monkey King (Sun Wukong), Pigsy (Zhu Bajie) and Sand Priest (Sha Wujing).
