Goddess of Mercy
Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, searching for powerful bodyguards in preparation for The Monk's (Tang Sanzang) journey west; recruited Wujing who was a Demon. She then converted him to Buddhism and gave him his current name, Sha Wujing (The Sand Priest). Finally, he was instructed to wait for a monk who would call for him. When The Sand Priest (Wujing) does meet The Monk (Tang Sanzang), he is mistaken for an enemy and attacked by The Monkey King (Sun Wukong) and Pigsy (Zhu Bajie). The Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin) is forced to intervene for the sake of the journey.
After the misunderstanding was cleared up, The Sand Priest (Wujing) became the third disciple of The Monk (Tang Sanzang).
Throughout the story, we keep seeing her helping the main characters whenever they are in trouble.
